Hazelnut Recalls due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Kunze Farm of Dayton, Oregon; Willamette Filbert Growers of Newberg, Oregon; and Willamette Shelling of Newberg, Oregon, recalled hazelnuts and hazelnut products due to possible Salmonella contamination. Because the hazelnuts were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, it is likely this recall will impact many products.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

US Food Safety Corporation is compiling a comprehensive list of recalled hazelnut products for consumers and also large lot products primarily for wholesale distribution.

Check this page often. The list is expected to have many additions as the recall propagates through the food supply. Although smaller in magnitude, the hazelnut recalls are exhibiting the same characteristics as the peanut and pistachio recalls of 2009. Initial recalls were issued by growers or processors, trickled down to distributors and food suppliers, and resulted in consumer products recalls.
