Fatima Brothers of Maspeth, New York is recalling Shad Javantri (Whole Mace) because it contains undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. Additionally, the product contains un-allowed dyes Rhodamine B (Basic Violet 10) and Malachite Green (Basic Green 4) and undeclared allowed color FD&C Yellow #5.

The recalled Shad Javantri comes in an un-coded 3.5 oz. plastic bag and was sold in New York City.

The recall was initiated after a routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspector and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 3.5 oz. packages of Shad Javantri (Whole Mace) which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.

No illness has been reported to date in connection with this problem.
